Small-scale traditional maize farming fosters greater arthropod diversity value than conventional maize farming

چکیده

Globally insects are in decline, with the transformation of natural areas for agriculture one most important drivers this decline. Yet, play an role regulating ecosystem services such as pollination, soil fertility and pest suppression, so their conservation within agricultural is critical. We examined comparative impacts traditional small-scale low input farming versus large-scale conventional systems, mono-cropped inter-cropped systems Kenyan maize fields on predator, ant herbivore arthropod species richness composition. also considered value hedgerows percentage surrounding cover conservation. As expected, retained higher richness, evenness abundance, well predator abundance compared to farming. Percentage was positively correlated determining assemblage composition ants herbivores. Hedgerow volume comparison mono- vs inter-cropping were predictors evenness. These results suggest that retain far numbers, although does not seem be due use intercropping farms. Rather it seems maintaining arthropods. While coverage farm increases arthropods fields, likely high biotope fidelity specialize open cropping fields. The here encouraging retention culturally techniques (i.e., farmers) small improvements, hedgerows, greatly promotes biodiversity farmlands.

Farmers frequently cope with risks due to the uncertainty of climatic conditions. Population growth, changes in agricultural policies, environmental regulations and the degradation of natural resources such as soil and water also present farmers with numerous challenges. Although farmers have experience in coping with a certain degree of uncertainty, increased climate variability and changes ma...

Genetically Modified Maize, Biodiversity, and Subsistence Farming in Mexico

Concern over the loss of genetic diversity in the world’s field crops has increased due to the commercial introduction of genetically modified crops. Mexico is particularly sensitive to this issue, as it is the center of genetic diversity for maize and home to a large number of indigenous farmers who propagate this diversity. This paper analyzes to what extent the biodiversity of maize may be e...
